Kite surfing
Yeeeah - I finally made it! After having thougth about it so often Käthy and I managed to book a 3-day kite surfing course in Podersdorf at Lake Neusiedl. The Thursday to Saturday adventure started with coffee in the morning and meeting the others: Martin and Franz two guys from Styria (who should become good friends of ours as they were as funny as we were), Ute a passionate windsurfer who was curious about kiting and Markus from Poland who moved to Vienna recently and was up for some weekend excitement.
Thursday
Half day of land kiting - which meant getting familiar with the flight performance and steering with a small sized kite (3.0 sqm) on land. In the afternoon the plan was to hit the water for the first time ... but due to a lack of wind we tackled the theoretical issues including wind, material, safety, etc. Then in the late afternoon wind came but our instructors Fabian and Bone hesitated. Being afraid that there might be no wind on Friday (which was true unfortunately) we jumped into our wetsuits and made our first water contact with the kites - great!
Friday
As the fear of an absolute "no-wind-at-all-day" came true we worked on the remaining theory while sitting in the sun and sipping coffee in the morning. As there was absolutely no wind to come at all we cancelled the afternoon session. Boring! But Käthy and I hit the road and went shopping at the Designer Outlet Center in Parndorf which was nearby. In the evening we met with Martin and Franz and also with friends of Käthy that live nearby and went for dinner and some wine.... ending up at the famous disotheque 'Martinskeller' (believe it or not - at this bar in this tiny village next to the hungarian border DJ Ötzi was working as a DJ when he created his first hits!)
Saturday
Waking up and seeing, feeling and hearing wind outside and on the shore of the lake is the best thing when you are facing a full day of water sessions with your kite! So we all met at the shore and went for some more practicing with the instructors. Everybody enjoyed to learn how to keep the kite in different postions... how to use the windpower for body dragging and finally in the late afternoon we also had our first tries with the kite board! Fabulous! Definitely this sport is challenging but it is great great fun! Käthy and I will hang on to it - soon we will be back at the lake and make use of your voucher for the instructor session that we missed due to no wind on Friday. And we will buy a trainer kite for land session on Donauinsel!
