Esbjörn Svensson's death

Birgit was breaking the news to me while I was on my way through town to the main uni auditorium in Salzburg on wednesday this week. First I could not believe it ... but rather quickly realized that she was not joking: Esbjörn Svensson died after a diving accident in Sweden.

First thoughts that came to my mind were that a genius of Jazz was lost forever. No more incredible sound and music to be expected from the trio ...
It took a while for me to realize that I was going about to be in the same room on wednesday morning (graduation of one of my best friends) in which I have heard E.S.T. perform live for the first and last time. (blog entry - est concert) It has been one of my most intense moments with live music in my life. I can not tell you how glad I am that I have had the chance to soak up this unbelievable athmosphere and dedication during the concert of those guys.

I have just read a heart touching tribute to Esbjörn. There is nothing more to add....

For those of you who have not listened to any EST tunes yet - here are my favourites:

Believe, Beleft, Below
[Brilliant song, not really sophicisticated but still goingt into depth however ... the first EST song I ever heard - I love it]

The Goldhearted Miner
[a really smooth song that lets you drift away in thoughts ... ]

Why she couldn't come
[I never figured out why ... but I could just tell that this is the only title possible for the song - you can feel that the song is telling the story the name is indicating ... and vice versa]

Elevation of love
[Variations and interpretations that never seem to end ... this song lets you know that they lived for music ... full of feelings]

Tune I listen to while writing these lines: The Goldhearted Miner

Tragic, isn't it? I still can't believe it. I've been listening to EST all week and "Believe, Beleft, Below" just had me in tears. Quiet beautiful.
